Weekly Weigh In - Amanda

So today was my weekly weigh in. I lost 1.5 pounds this week, putting my total loss for 2009 at 12.5 pounds. I will be happy in the success of losing weight this week, but will be honest that I am disappointed in the small number. I successfully ran 14 miles this week, and with all that running, I was sure I would put up big numbers this week. I'm hoping that the reason for the small number is that I'm creating muscle with the running and that the muscle is weighing more than the fat. I'm hoping!!

I am trying to take the advice of Lynne and realize that this is a process, to take each day at a time and realize that with small weight loss comes big results. I know this, but some days it's really hard to swallow this concept. I am working on trying to be optomistic about it ALL. I really am.

I do have to vent for a moment though - since I am the only one out of the girls that has had a child so far, they are probably not going to be able to answer my question, but how in the world is it that I now weigh less than I did on my honeymoon, my honeymoon clothes are mostly too big, and yet my belly is fatter than it was on my honeymoon? I know that having a baby changes your body in many ways, but I didn't know that when you were losing weight, that your body might change it's mind on where to store it and lose it from. Seriously! I can now fit into the pants that I wore in my engagement pictures - I have to wear a belt to keep them on my waist, but they are so tight across my lower abdomen, I feel like I'm wearing a gurdle. This stuff drives me crazy! When I finally fit into an old pair of pants, they don't fit like they used to. I'm trying to convince myself that this just means that I get to buy a new wardrobe rather than wearing the old 'me' clothes, but in the process of losing weight, it's not easy (or costly) to buy new clothes for every size you go down. Wait...am I seriously complaining about buying smaller clothes?? No..I'm not. I take it back. I love buying new, smaller clothes. In fact, I think I'm going to treat myself to a new pair of jeans and shirt tonight. There! (I am now done venting. Thank You.)

  2. A pound and a half is really something to be proud of, Amanda! I run 3-4 times a week and I don't lose a damn pound. Nor do I notice a difference in how my clothes fit...I think 12 pounds for this year is a really great start. Keep up the work!

As for the difference in your body post baby...you're right, I really don't know. When I started working out after gaining weight, my body shifted in totally weird ways. I was doing exercises that trainers were saying, but I was building bulk WAY more than losing or toning. And My tummy seemed to be getting bigger as well. Eventually I just had to give my trainer the boot (and the finger) and decide for myself that the workout regime he thought up was not good for my body type. I adjusted my workout to be 80% cardio and a tiny bit of toning. It's still not perfect and I'm not completely happy with the results, but it's an improvement...

  3. You are doing a great job, Amanda! 1.5 pounds is something to be proud of! I totally understand the disappointment with only losing 1.5 pounds last week, as I only lost 0.8 pounds last week as well. It can be discouraging, but we have to remind ourselves that a loss is a loss, not matter how small the number may be. I was SO frustrated last week, but I'll take a loss (as small as it was) any day over gaining a pound or two. We just have to keep going.

You are doing an awesome job with running! I'm so jealous that you are able to keep up with your running and commit to it. You are still an inspiration! And my Weight Watchers leader told me once that when you work out and use your muscles, your muscles are actually tearing each time you are at the gym. To heal these tears, there is a build-up of lactic acid in the muscles, which can affect your weight, especially if you weigh in one to two days after a strenuous workout.

As with Colleen, I'm not sure what the difference in your body is after a baby, but I do know that every time you lose weight and gain weight, it's different. My body feels different this time around, as I gained about 30/40 pounds last year...the weight just went to different parts and my clothes fit completely different. The only thing I can suggest is to keep up with your cardio to burn fat, and things should even out eventually.

You are doing an awesome job and I always look forward to seeing how you are doing! Congrats!
